Lilith

In some tellings Adam had a wife before Eve, Lilith. Made of the same clay as he was and at the same moment, and holding herself to be thus his equal, she refused to take a submissive position to him and ultimately fled. Adam complained of this to God, who dispatched angels to collect and then pin her down for him.

When considering a portrait of Lilith, I grappled over which element of her story was most significant -- her subjugation, or her defiance. In the end, I found a way to show both.
